Christmas parties, bienvenida and despedida gatherings, weddings, christenings, birthdays — all are happy occasions to celebrate friendships forged more than decades ago. For a brief afternoon or evening, we indulge ourselves with the company of old seatmates, playmates, confidantes, kumares with whom we shared the joys of our youth, some innocent, some naughty, but always never quite fathomable to our own spouses, children and (gasp!) grandchildren. And then after much happy talk and boisterous laughter, we gain a sense of nostalgia and thank one another, thinking “Life is good. How blessed indeed are we to have each other still!” And then, once again, “parting is such sweet sorrow”. And we look forward to the joy of the next reunion. And the next.
